Gundam Build Fighters Try Episode 22: Follow Your Heart

Let’s TRYON indeed. This episode was a love letter to another kind of mecha fan, one that does not always cross over with the Gundam fan base but on this occasion it most certainly did. Tryon 3 is a massive love letter to the mecha that came before, to the super robots that once dominated the mecha genre with tales of hot-blooded warriors defending earth form anything and everything and perhaps fittingly it does not fall to the Gundam parading as super robots (Try Burning and Star Winning) but to the remaining Real Robot of the cast, the Lightning Gundam in what is easily the most enjoyable battle of the show.

Before we reach that though we have Wilfred and Lucas speaking after there battle where Wilfred admits Lucas is the stronger of the two in a head to head battle. Lucas doesn’t seem to mind his lost though and instead says his good byes to both Wilfred and Sekai telling them to meet him on the world stage some day while the Academy learn from the battle they have a long way to go to reach world-class.

The battle for a change was a delight though it was funny to see the first piece of a plan the Try Fighters try (stop the Tryon from combining) fails so miserably thanks to a shield Sakai creates during the sequence. the Tryon then gets to go though the normal battle of being able to over power the Try Fighters though this time it at least feels like a battle just with the Tryon 3 been the strongest. Some of the Super Robot call out attacks the Tryon use are flashy but perfectly in line with what people love from the genre.

Things eventually come down to Yuuma vs Sakai, and for a change it’s not a magic power up out of nowhere that wins Yuuma the day but his own grit and skill as he faces down the titan like Tryon 3. Both parties give an emotional showing and the show even acknowledges the time out rule when Sakai considers retreating to time Yuuma out of the fight but eventually faces him in real brave fashion. Tryon ultimately loses but for a change it’s a satisfying win for the Try Fighters and real hard-fought one as well. Sakai and Yuuma also make up off the field of battle and resolve to battle again at modeling during the Meijin cup that Sakai has wanted Yuuma to enter.

Well it was always going to happen but at-least there is solace in Tryon 3 going out like a champion in the battle vs the Try Fighters and taking out two of the fighters during the battle. The was by far the closest battle of this tournament so far and really felt like it came down to the wire without any cheap tricks to pull the Try Fighters back out of a hole. Sakai can be a bit of an ass but I actually grew to like the guy and his style. Lots of shout outs, great animation and close fought battle, if only the rest of the show was like this. 9/10
