Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons Episode 24: A Battle with No Tomorrow

Lots of action this week as Ange takes a back seat to allow pretty much each of the side characters to get to shine during the final. Things kick off with Jill meeting with Salia as Jill taunts Salia by telling her about Jill’s own past love with Embryo but Salia is still in denial and refuses to believe what Jill tells her opening a way for Ange to escape to Aura. Salia is still upset about Jill using her, shedding tears as she battles her old idol. It’s after Salia and the other girls are wrapped away for bait and she is saved by Jill that she see’s that Embryo too was just using her.

Tusk continues to hold up Embryo in his mothers machine for much of the episode as the two argue over Ange and who she will end up with. As Embryo talks of Ange like a beast to be tamed by him and tries to brag about seeing Ange in her birth suit, Tusk has a bit of a wake up call for him calling him sad for trying to control her. Embryo gets really pissed as Tusk tells him of his and Ange’s three-day affair on the beach while holding on pair or even the advantage vs Embryo’s Ragnamail in his mothers Paramail.

Chris is the last of the broken girls to have to face the reality of Embryo abandoning her and she almost goes insane from it all. As she flips out saying that Rosalie and Hilda abandoned her Rosalie finally starts to speak up saying they never. Hilda is a little less persuasive as normal flat-out calling Chris an idiot for just believing someone who said he was her friend and calling her Emo for never speaking up to them about how much she was suffering. In the end Rosalie is able to win Chris back with her pleading and show her how much she and Hilda care for her. It’s certainly the good end for Chris though I’m still scratching my head after all these years why anime writers think giant metal hands can catch people in free fall and they wouldn’t die…

The DRAGON’s also return here in force as the worlds begin to merge the DRAGON’s are let into the world were the Priestess quickly allies with the Norma and the DRAGON’s provide aerial assistance to the Aurora. Embryo sends his girls to be DRAGON bait as he rushes off to try to meet and Ange but he can’t get there before Salia and Ange release the king of DRAGON’s himself Aura is free. And while it was great to hear an almost full rendition of Sala’s song, Aura’s ascension was really an impressive moment in the show. But what role will the original DRAGON play?

As Embryo sacrifices his girls to the DRAGON’s den his only eyes remain on Ange even when Jill appears before him. At first it seems Jill is ready to swap sides but after he rejects her, she turns all woman scorned on him and attempts to kill or capture him. We also learn of Jill having been lusting after Tusk’s father while he choose his mother and it was this seed of lust that allowed Embryo to slip into Jill’s feelings(and other things). Her plan seems fine in trying to freeze his body but she soon learns that this body that everyone has managed to kill isn’t the real him but rather he appears to be linked with his mecha the Hysterica and perhaps destroying his prototype Ragna-mail will be the key to ending Embryo..

The penultimate episode really goes out of its way to get all of the side characters some screen time and moments to shine before the final battle ad Ange has a very minor role here. Instead we see the drama between Salia and Jill, Chris and her old friends and even Tusk vs Embryo. the action never really lulls here and it’s a great ride from start to finish with some great musical background vocals to set the mood up well. Only one to go and I’ll be sad to see it end. 8.5/10
